Mother’s Day Ideas in Durham Region

on 05/10/2013

Tomorrow is Mother’s Day, and just in case you haven’t yet had a chance to plan anything here are a few ideas of where you could go or what you can do for your lovely mother!

Great Breakfasts, Brunches, Lunches and Dinners

For a great Sunday Brunch to celebrate your mom, check out Cora’s (always a favourite) just off Pickering Parkway and Brock in Pickering. Great a la carte selections filled with delicious fruit, such as crepes, sausages and more.

Brunch includes meals such as eggs benedict with peameal bacon, and a french toast meal. Mother’s Day Lunch has the choice of a number of pastas, seafoods and steaks ranging from $15-$18. Dinner has a more varied menu that can be found online

Breakfasts at these restaurants are more the old fashioned bacon and eggs, omelettes and more.

Looking for a great brunch deal? Moms eat brunch FREE at Lonestar Texas Grill in Pickering.

foxgoesfreeFor a delicious dinner, there are great choices for all budgets. Massey’s off Liverpool always has great, reasonably priced food (if you have the chance to try their curry chicken soup be sure to try it!). If Greek is your thing, nobody be ts Chef Tommy’s (now located in Oshawa). Looking for a low-key pub? Check out The Fox Goes Free in Pickering, which has a great patio to boot, as does Safari Bar and Grill, which has a more eclectic menu to choose from.

If your mom is a steak lover (and honestly, in my experience, very few moms are), then bring her out to 22 Church Steakhouse for a tasty bite to eat, or check out the Mother’s Day Menu at The Keg.

Local Gift Ideas

If you’re looking for a gift for your mother there are lots of great ideas in Durham. From flowers to massages, here are some easy ideas.

I have to put this one in first, possibly because all this blogging about food has made me hungry. There are some amazing bakeries in Durham region, two of my favourites being Coco Cake Co. and Cupcakes Canada, both of which are cupcake bakeries, although Coco does make cookies and pies as well. Head in-store and pick up a half-dozen cupcakes to let your mom know how much you appreciate her! (And remember – champagne goes great with cupcakes!)

Ora Mangiamo, a newer spot in Pickering is a delicious Italian bakery with traditional Italian desserts. There are cakes, pastries and more available, but you can special order desserts as well.  Keeping in line with Italian, check out Bellagio’s at Kingston and Whites, where you can  have a great lunch followed by delicious homemade gelato.
If you’re looking for a tasty pie or butter tarts, honestly, nothing beats the Pie Guy. Located north of Finch on Scarborough/Pickering townline (a little west of Altona), this roadside stand has a delicious assortment of pies, all $10, as well as the best buttertarts you will ever taste, 6 for $6. Cash only, there is nobody on site so please be honest as this man puts a lot of work into making these amazing pies.

Looking for a beautiful bouquet? Reed’s Florist, Violet Bloom and English Ivy, among others, provide beautiful arrangements. More budget conscious? Sobey’s actually has beautiful flower arrangements at very reasonable prices, starting from $20 with a vase. Costco is the best bang for your buck, with large boquets (sans vase) starting around $15.

There are some great pedicurists throughout the region, including Bassett Spa in Pickering, or Spa Sedona in Ajax. Another location offering great mani/pedis and massages (among others) is the newer Holistic Spa in Ajax. Finally, visit the Purple Monarch Holistic Health and Wellness Centre, located in Moksha Yoga Pickering. Purple monarch offers treatments such as massages, hot stone therapy, acupuncture and reiki, among others.

If your mom is more of a yoga fan, treat her to classes at Moksha Yoga Pickering, an amazing hot yoga studio in Durham region. Classes are generally $19.50, or buy a 10-class pass for $145. If she is a new member, purchase the unlimited intoductory month  for only $40!

I hope you all have a great mother’s day, and I hope I’ve given you some ideas! Have a great weekend everyone, and we’ll talk soon!
