Tips for Staying Cool Today

on 07/21/2011

Hello all,

As you likely all know, today is supposed to be a scorcher with temperatures reaching upwards of 47 today with the humidex. Even as I write this (at 7:30 in the morning) it’s feeling like 38 outside! If you’re looking for ways to stay cool today, you’ve come to the right place. Keep reading for more tips on how to beat the heat!

Stay Hydrated
Stock up on that bottled water, or be sure to bring a reuseable bottle with you wherever you go today. Try to avoid drinks with too much caffeine or sugar, stick with water or 100% natural juices.

Stay out of the Sun
Who really wants to be standing outside in this kind of heat if they don’t have to be? Try to find somewhere indoors to be if you have the day off. A nice, air-conditioned building perhaps? Check out your local library, mall, grocery store, or recreation centre…you might find a new activity to do while staying nice and cool!

Wear Light, Loose-Fitting Clothing
Today is not the day for any heavy clothing! Try to opt for breathable cottons and linens that wick moisture away from the body and keep you cool

Turn the Lights Down
In fact, why not keep them off altogether? If you don’t need it on, don’t turn it on. It may seem harmless, but all those light bulbs produce heat while turned on, and isn’t there enough heat today?

Make Use of Those Ceiling Fans
They may not always be pretty, but your ceiling fan can really help cool your home down today by circulating the air.

Take a Cold Shower
If you have time, it’s very helpful to take a cold shower, or two, throughout the day. If you’re stuck at work reading this, think about taking a shower when you get home. It’s refreshing, it’s cool, what more could you ask for?

Fire Up The Grill
Who wants to turn a hot oven on today? Not me, that’s who. Instead, grill your dinner! Yes, you’ll have to stand out in the heat for a bit, but it’s a great consolation to a hot sticky house. If you’re looking for a tasty new flavour, I love the Compliments meat marinades you can buy from Sobeys, especially the herb and garlic (great on chicken!) and if you’re looking for a meatless dish, try the roasted veggie sandwiches at the bottom of this post. They’re my all-time favourite summer food. Or, come up with your own new creation!

Less Makeup is More Makeup
This is for ladies only. Skip the foundation and powders and opt for something a little lighter, like tinted moisturizer. I use Marcelle SPF 15 tinted moisturizer from Shopper’s Drug Mart, but there are tons of options out there. Not only will you feel lighter, you’ll look better in this heat!

If you DO Have to Brave the Heat…
PLEASE remember your sunscreen! The UV index is extremely high today and we all know what kind of health risks a sunburn can cause. Go for a higher SPF, at least 45 in this weather, and more if you can find it.

If you have elderly friends or family, or know anybody without air conditioning, try to check up on them throughout the day. It’s a hot one, and we want everyone to stay safe! Hope you all manage to stay nice and cool today, I’d love to hear how you did it!

Roasted Veggie Sandwiches (Sorry about the less-than-professional writeup of this…I just tend to make these differently every time, something you can do as well)

1 Eggplant
1-2 Zucchini
1-2 Red Peppers
Feta Cheese
Ciabatta Buns
1-2 tsp Olive Oil
Italian Seasoning, or any other herbs you’d like to use

Slice zucchini and eggplant lengthwise in strips, and cut red pepper into 3-4 large pieces. Brush in olive oil and season with your choice of herbs (an easy combination is italian seasoning). Place on grill and cook until well roasted. Remove from grill, and keep warm. Put thin coat of butter or margarine on buns if you like, and place on grill until lightly toasted. Remove from grill. Slice the feta cheese to a thickness you’d like, and layer eggplant, zucchini, red pepper and feta cheese on your bun. Enjoy!
